Cornell Falls to Dartmouth in Hanover

Saturday, September 20, 2014

Cornell traveled to Hanover this past weekend to take on Dartmouth in a matchup of the 2013 Ivy South and Ivy North Champions.

Questions about the technicalities of last year’s Ivy League set up and the fallibility of comparison across Ivy League north/south conferences instilled extra significance into Saturday’s game.

Dartmouth scored early, scoring three tries and making one conversion to take the lead 17-0 within the first fifteen minutes. A yellow card on Cornell captain Chuck Motzer halfway through the first half led to a successful penalty kick and a 20-0 Dartmouth lead. Cornell eight-man John Schuler put the Faded Red on the board soon after, but a missed conversion kept the score at 20-5.

Tries by Max Parker, Zach Fowler and captain Madison Hughes allowed Dartmouth to extended their lead to 37-5. The Big Green continued to score frequently, pounding the Cornell defense with piercing forward runs and sweeping back maneuvers answered only by a second Cornell try by scrumhalf Dave Chevarra late in the second half.

Dartmouth finished 61-10. Contributions came from all across the pitch, the team’s 9 tries coming from 5 different players.

"After what seemed like a long preseason we are happy to get our Ivy Conference defense underway,” commented Dartmouth Coach Gavin Hickie after the game. “During preseason we focused on our core skills and it was satisfying to see us execute well and cut down our unforced errors." However, Hickie cautioned against complacency in anticipation of the match at Harvard this coming Saturday. “I'm happy with our game plan against a physical Cornell side but the score line flattered us and we know we have a lot of work ahead of us next week before we travel to Harvard."

Dartmouth will travel to Cambridge next week to take on Harvard, while Cornell will head south to New York City to challenge Columbia.
