Brown Men 39 - Cornell Men 17

Sunday, September 25, 2011

Brown University was able to bounce back from the disappointing loss to Columbia a day earlier to defeat Cornell 39-17.  The 97 points Cornell gave up the day before did not seem to matter on this day as Cornell fought tooth and nail to eventually take their second loss of the Ivy season.

Immediately marching down the field Brown started the game with a score.   Taking the ball at the back of a ruck scrum half Matt Leonard’14, move the ball through the entire backline from Zahid Jethani’13 toTaylor Peak’12 to Dow Traverse’12 to fullback Ryan Jones’14 who scored to give the Bears an early lead.  Jethani converted with a beautiful sideline kick.  (7-0 Brown)

Despite giving ground with a few penalties, Brown kept the pressure on and in the 6th minute found the try zone after a brilliant run by Taylor Peak who stiff armed a would be tackler at the five meter line landing himself in the corner for the try.  Jethani missed the conversion attempt.  (12-0 Brown)

Brown was again plagued by penalties that enabled Cornell to keep pressure within Brown territory.  In the 15th minute Cornell made Brown pay with a try and conversion.  (12-7 Brown)

In the 18th minute Cornell, granted a penalty in the center of the field at the Brown 22 meter, easily converted for 3 points to close within two points (12-10) of the Bears.

In the 24th minute Brown answered with a try of its own.  After stealing a Cornell scrum  Matt Leonard found lock Lachland Stewart’13  who scored in the corner.  Jethani converted for a 9 point Brown cushion.

In the 30th minute James McGinn received a Cornell kick at the Cornell 45.  After sidestepping a would be tackler he took it up another 10 meters and set a ruck.  With Leonard leading two quick phases out to the right wing Daniel Tondreys’14 scored in the corner.  After missing the conversion Brown lead 24-10 at halftime.

In the 6th minute of the second half, Cornell capitalized on another Brown penalty which gave Cornell a line-out inside Brown territory.  Off the line out Cornell ran two phases which ended with a missed tackle in the Brown back line and try under the posts.  Cornell converted and Brown’s lead was only 7 points, 24-17.

In the 51st minute Brown responds with a series of strong forward smashes that set up an overload exploited by the Brown backline resulting in a James McGinn try in the corner.  The conversion attempt is missed by Zethani  (29-17 Brown)

In the 56th minute, the Brown backline, synchronizing offensively, executed a perfect backline play where Zethani put away a hard crashing Taylor Peak who scored in the corner.  Zethani misses the conversion attempt but Brown extended lead 34-17.

Brown held Cornell at bay the remainder of the match, closing out the Bear scoring with a final try in the 77th minute.  After a strong Brown scrum, Leonard passed to flanker Chaney Harrison’12 who scored in the corner to end the scoring.
