Brown Men 53 - Yale 15

Saturday, October 22, 2011

With sole possession of second place on the line, the Bears came to play, overwhelming a young Yale team with four converted first half tries, all scored by motivated seniors playing their last Ivy Rugby Conference match of the season. The entire Brown forward pack deserve an assist for their dominance in the scrums, lineouts and breakdowns.

However, it was lock Chaney Harrison11.5 from a lineout drive, hooker and co-captain Dan Levine-Spound’12.5 from a ruck break and flanker Brent Zajaczkowski’12 who scored the first three tries. A clever kick ahead by fly half Zahid Jethani’13 gave Zajaczkowski a tap down in goal and a similar kick by “Z” was pounced on by center and co-captain Dow Travers’12 for Brown’s last try of the first half. Left wing James McGinn’s ’12 boot was on fire has he converted 4 of 4 to provide Brown with a 23 point halftime cushion.

As the second half began, Brown’s scrum half Matt Leonard’14 took a quick penalty from five meters for a try, and Yale’s #12 followed with a breakaway try. However, Brown went on a burst with four unanswered tries to put the match away. Any kicking magic from the first half disappeared as Brown was unable to convert any second half scores.

Breaks by fullback Ryan Jones’14 and Travers were finished off by right wing Dan Tonderys’14 who broke a tackle and lunged over the line for a try. A lineout break from the forwards was quickly reversed with Jethani and center Taylor Peak’12 putting  McGinn’12 away for a try. Reserve fly half, Blair Cameron’13 made broke for 40 meters  then kicked ahead for Travers, who won the footrace for the try. And to finish, Brown disrupted a Yale scrum, with flanker Lachland Stewart’13 breaking with the ball and feeding Harrison for the last try of the match. It was appropriate that these two forwards partnered for the final score as they were dominant on the field all day.

Props Micah Baclig’14 and Everett Epstein’13 and locks Mike Wharton’12 and Landon Turley’12 were work horses all day, and all of the second half reserves kept the team fresh and attacking until the final whistle.
