1st XV Penn Men at Cornell Men

Saturday, October 18, 2014

Cornell took on the University of Pennsylvania this Saturday at home for Cornell Homecoming. In front of larger than usual crowd of fans, friends, and alumni, the Big Red put on a strong showing, beating the Fighting Quakers 41-22.

Lock Matt Byrne started the day for Cornell, scoring the first try on a FAP (forward action play), with a successful conversion made by scrumhalf Dave Chevarra. Cornell's forward pack scored again, and then Chevarra scored his own try and kicked his third successful conversion of the day. Cornell captain Chuck Motzer scored before the half to put Cornell up 26-3 at halftime.

Following the kickoff for the second half, sophomore wing Dan Capelin flew down the sideline on a breakaway to score a try to make the score 31-3. Penn scored  three times during the rest of the second half, but Capelin scored his second try of the day in the waning minutes, clinching the game for Cornell 41-22. Penn failed to bring a B-side, partly in fear of the 126-0 drubbing they received by Cornell's second team last year in Philadelphia. This week Cornell will travel to Massachusetts to take on the Harvard Crimson.
