Dartmouth Women Debut Varsity Play With Win

The Dartmouth women’s rugby team played its first game as a varsity squad on Saturday, defeating the University of Pennsylvania 77-5.

Scoring kicked off with #5 Ashley Zepeda crossing the line four minutes in. Big Green jumped out to a 29-0 lead midway through the first half and led 48-5 at the half. 

Freshman Kat Ramage, a Morris Rugby alum, finished with 13 points in her first match with the team. Yejadai Dunn dotted down three times for a game-high 15 points.

Penn’s Emma Edoga scored the team’s lone try 23 minutes into the first half.

Colgate Takes the Claret Cup from the Big Red

On September 6, Cornell University hosted Colgate for the annual Claret Mug match. Within the first 5 minutes of the match both teams swapped tries as Kwame Larbi ’17 crossed over for his first try with Charlie Murphy ’16 converting his effort and Cornell answering back with an unconverted try of their own.  Colgate took advantage of a couple of Cornell miscues and slotted two penalties by Murphy ’16.  Cornell struck again in the 20th minute but was unable to convert their try.

Cornell Over West Chester in Final Preseason Match

Cornell defeated West Chester 33-16 in the final preseason match before kicking off the Ivy Rugby fall season this weekend vs Columbia.

Scoring began with a try from Cornell’s Ethan “Pumba” Venosa 13 minutes in. Big Red led 20-11 at the break and would go on to outscore the Golden Rams 13-5 in the second half for the 33-16 win.

Brown Defeats Navy in Season Opener, 36-5

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior Saskia Morgan recorded four tries to propel Brown University women's rugby to a 36-5 win at the United States Naval Academy on Saturday at the Brigade Sports Complex.

In the season opener for the Bears (1-0), Morgan scored three tries in the second half alone while seniors Josephine Darpolor (Pecos, Texas) and Uzoamaka Okoro (Darien, Ill.) each added a try.

Hughes Named “Olympian to Watch” by Sports Illustrated

Sports Illustrated has named “10 potential first-time US Olympians to watch” and one of them is Madison Hughes, leader of the USA Eagles national sevens team and captain emeritus of the Dartmouth rugby squad. 

Hughes is featured alongside other young rising stars including volleyball’s Taylor Sander, track & field’s Ajee Wilson, gold medal favorite gymnast Simone Biles and (already a star) golf’s Jordan Speith.

Cornell Men Ready to Build on Momentum This Fall

Things did not look promising last September for Cornell University men’s rugby. Big Red started the fall fifteens season with a crushing loss to Dartmouth, and were then handed a defeat by Columbia. The losses were unexpected after an unbeaten 2013 fall season. 

A string of injuries had taken its toll, and the offense was not clicking. If the team was going to salvage its season, it had to bear down. And bear down it did.

Ivy Players Named to USA Rugby National Academic Honor Roll

Harvard and Dartmouth are well represented on the 2014-15 USA Rugby National Collegiate Honor Roll, with 12 scholar-athletes from these schools making the list. 

Qualification for the honor roll includes maintaining a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average, having completed at least a full year if college and playing on the A-side of a rugby team.

Yale Men Run With the Chiefs, Hamilton Marist in NZ

Five members of the Yale Men’s Rugby Team are in New Zealand this summer training with the coaching staff of the Chiefs Investec Super Rugby Team in Hamilton and playing with the storied Hamilton Marist rugby club. 

Yale players Will Roberts, John Donovan, Louis Metcalfe, Evan Brown and Luke Thomas are receiving skills sessions from the coaching staff of the Chiefs, back-to-back Super Rugby league champions in 2012 and 2013.

Playing for Hamilton Marist Premier B side, Roberts and Brown helped their team to a 101-14 victory over United Matamata Sports on June 27.

Former National Player Katie Dowty Named Head Coach of Dartmouth Women’s Rugby

HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth Director of Athletics and Recreation Harry Sheehy announced Thursday the hiring of Katie Dowty as the new head coach for women’s rugby.

The women’s rugby program will be elevated to Division I status as the Big Green’s 35th varsity sport for the 2015-16 academic year. It had operated as a club team since its inception in 1978 with Deb Archambault coaching the squad for the past 28 years before recently announcing her retirement.

CRC Report: Dartmouth Falls in Plate Final

After a 20-5 victory over Air Force in the Plate Semis, Dartmouth could not overcome a tough UCLA team in the Plate Final of the 2015 Collegiate Rugby Championships in Philadelphia, losing to the Bruins 33-5.
