Dartmouth posts a 52-3 win over Princeton

Sunday, September 26, 2010

After a convincing Saturday victory at the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth headed North to take on Princeton at West Winsor Fields.

Princeton, NJ -  Led by Chris Downer’s two tries, Dartmouth posted a 52-3 win over Princeton in Sunday’s second round road match. Added to Saturday’s 78-7 win over the University of Pennsylvania, the Big Green scored a total of 130 points over the weekend while allowing only 10.

Picking up where they left off on Saturday, Dartmouth went out to a 40-3 halftime lead before getting off the gas. The Big Green opened with tries by Will Lehmann, Paul Jarvis and loosehead prop Dave Gomez; all three converted by Derek Fish, 21-0.

Princeton responded with a penalty kick by Pete Davidson (21-3), their only score of the day, before Dartmouth’s assault resumed.

A chip kick from captain Tommy Brothers put Chris Downer in scoring position and Fish’s conversion increased Dartmouth’s lead to 28-3.  The half closed with Dartmouth tries by flanker Ian Hogg and Chris Downer (his second) and one Fish conversion, giving the visitors a 40-3 half time lead.

Second Half
Early in the second half, after multiple Dartmouth substitutions, the Green pack won possession and Will Lehmann scored a try that Fish converted, 47-3.

Dartmouth’s last try came with thirty-five minutes remaining when it pinned  Princeton in its own end. A turnover resulted in a corner try by Carl Zehner, 52-3.

“Today was a big improvement. We got 15 more guys time in a 1st-XV match,” said co-captain Chris Downer, referring to the mutual decision to allow unlimited 2nd half substitutions.  Downer felt the additional experience for reserve-grade players “will definitely help our depth going forward. All told, it was a great weekend to build on.”
