Dartmouth tops 100 in front of the home crowd

Saturday, October 9, 2010

Dartmouth hosted Brown during the 60th Anniversary weekend of rugby. DRFC was able to win by a large margin 107-5 with Brown scoring in the waning minutes of the contest to avoid the shutout.

Hanover, NH - In a match that required a calculator to keep score, undefeated defending Ivy League Champion Dartmouth posted its fourth straight win of the 2010 season, annihilating an out-manned Brown side 107-5.

Led by Chris Downer’s six tries, the Big Green went out to a 50-0 halftime lead and then added 57 points after the break. Brown’s lone try came late in the match with Dartmouth leading 102-0.

Dartmouth’s eight first half tries were scored by Chris Downer (4), Preet Gurusamy (2), Carl Zehner (1) and Lane Bracken (1). Derek Fish added five conversions bringing Dartmouth’s lead at the break to 50-0.

Second Half
Dartmouth got nine second half tries from Chris Downer (2), Michael Gordon (2), Nate Brakeley (1), Dylan Jones (2) Sam Gehret (1) and Derek Fish (1).

Derek Fish converted six of the second half tries, bringing his point total to 27 (1T, 11C).

With its 107-5 win over Brown, Dartmouth - coached by Dartmouth alum and former Eagle Alex Magelby - has outscored its Ivy opponents 273-30

Brown's Take

In a match that pitted an injured and short handed Brown squad against what is clearly the Ivy League’s best team, the visitors gave up four quick scores in the first 10 minutes and, then, totally collapsed, losing by the unbelievable margin of 107-5. Left wing Dow Travers’12 scored Brown’s only points on as try in the 76th minute of play.

The coaches and yours truly were just unwilling to put this score in print until after our 50th Anniversary weekend.  Brown, in the past decade, has had some big losses to some of New England’s powerhouse teams but nothing can match this margin of defeat.

With so many players injured and in and out of training since pre-season, we have been patching the squad together all season. This match was the “perfect storm” of missing and injured players and it couldn’t have come against a better team. The only bright light is that we look to be moving toward full strength over the upcoming last two weekends of the season.
