Yale 21 - Columbia 10

Sunday, September 26, 2010

Baker Field,  New York, NY -  In its second victory of the weekend, Yale went into halftime with a 14-10 lead over host Columbia and then added a converted try to post a 21-10 win.

Columbia, which had defeated Harvard on Saturday, got on the board first when center Evan Platt hit a penalty kick in the third minute, 3-0.

Yale had an opportunity to take the lead over heavily penalized Columbia but center Ryan Vandersloot was off the mark on makeable penalty kicks in the sixth and ninth minutes.

In the 11th minute, however, Yale wing Rob Morse scored a long-distance try after taking a pass from fullback Dan O’Brien. Vandersloot’s conversion gave Yale a lead (7-3) that they would not relinquish.

Yale would stretch its lead to 14-3 in the 17th minute when Dan O’Brien scored a try that Vandersloot converted.

Penalty-plagued Columbia fought back, narrowing the halftime margin to 14-10 when center Ian Elliott touched down and Evan Platt converted, 14-10.

Second Half
Penalties continued to plague Columbia and they were yellow-carded ten minutes after the restart for repeated infringements. Yale, however, was unable to capitalize as another Vandersloot penalty kick was off the mark.

Yale’s final score came in the 26th minute. Columbia lost possession at a scrum near their own line and Yale flanker Raymond Grissom was there to carry it in for a try. Vandersloot’s conversion brought the score to 21-10.

Columbia continued to battle and kept Yale pinned deep in its own end. Yale had a goal line stand lasting 8-10 minutes and was able to keep Columbia from scoring.
