Penn Beats Columbia in the Lions Den

Saturday, October 13, 2012

Columbia falls to Penn at Randall's Island, NY with the final score 50-21. Coming off a close and hard fought match in Philadelphia, both the University of Pennsylvania Quakers and the Columbia University Lions looked for a decisive victory in their rematch at Randall’s Island.

As expected the match opened with hard play from both sides, with Columbia driving Penn back several times in the contact point. Nevertheless, Penn opened up the scoring with Sawyer Waugh powering in a try off a penalty awarded at Columbia’s five-meter. The next try of the game was also Penn’s and it too came off a penalty awarded to Penn within Columbia’s twenty-two meter line. This time the try scorer was Jaworski Weis who put the ball down after it was spun out wide. With Doug Swift’s conversion the Quakers jumped out to an early 14-0 lead. Columbia was able to answer back with their first try of the game as they powered the ball through the Penn defense with some hard running and touched it down to cut the lead to seven. After some back and forth, Penn was able to extend their lead with a try off a stolen scrum. With the ball in their hands, Penn was able to spin the ball out to Fonzarelli Collins who put it down for the try. Fonzarelli also put in the next try, which came off a beautiful grubber by Nabil Darwich. Douglas Swift’s conversion put the score at 26-7, and the half closed at that score.

Columbia opened the second half strong and looked to narrow the deficit. However, Penn’s defense was able to withstand the onslaught. When Penn’s turn to attack came, they capitalized using some clever offloads to spring Jaworski Weis for his second try of the day. Off the ensuing kickoff, Sawyer Waugh received the ball and burst through the line for a sixty-meter line break. The Quakers support was there on time and Sawyer was able to capitalize on all of Waugh’s hard work to score the try. Columbia brought the score to 38-14 with a score that came off some good continuity from the base of a scrum within Penn’s twenty-two meter line. But Penn answered back with a Daleroy Sibanda try that came at the end of some nice backline passing. Columbia would continue to fight and would put another one through, the result of some multi-phase rugby off a lineout, making the score 43-21. However, the Quakers would have the final try of the day, which came off a nice kick by Duggy Swift that dropped fortuitously into the hands of a rampaging Arthur Rempel. With the conversion the game ended at 50-21 for Penn.
