Harvard University 44 @ University of Pennsylvania 0

Harvard opened its season with a trip to the University of Pennsylvania. The game was Harvard’s first under the new Ivy League Fall Schedule, which promises both excellent competition and intense rivalries in the years to come.

1st XV Harvard 44 - Penn 0 Harvard’s Dan Deighton ‘10 wasted no time in kicking off the season and bagged two quick scores. Captain Jonny Miller ‘10 converted both kicks and showcased great game awareness in managing the backs. Dave Renteln ‘11 put a summer in the gym to good work with hard running and a well placed kick to set up one of Deighton’s tries. Winger Khaki Burke ‘10 sped in for another try, but Jonny was unable to convert. The Penn squad fought valiantly but was unable to keep possession for long, and both Deighton and Jonathan Kola ‘12 added to Harvard’s total.

Xander Groeneveld ‘11 led the Harvard forwards with his superb tackling in the second half, and solid rucking from the HRFC paved the way for excellent running from the backs. Penn’s defense was no match for Teddy Barron ‘11, who powered in for three consecutive tries to wrap up the shutout match.

HRFC President Charlie Boutwell was named man of the match for his excellent and consistent all-around play. Final Score: Harvard 44, Penn 0
