Photo and Write-up by Ed Hagerty Rugby Magazine New York, NY - Led by two tries apiece from wing Zach Bull and flanker Derrick Lipscomb, Columbia defeated the University of Pennsylvania 30-18 under the lights at Baker Field in New York City. Columbia’s record is now 1-2, while Penn falls to 0-3.

Columbia drew first blood in the third minute with a try by flanker Steve Hen and increased its lead ten minutes later with a spectacular try by wing Zach Bull. Columbia’s attack started at mid-field and the ball came out to Bull at Penn’s 30. Confronted by defenders, Bull pop-kicked ahead, recovered possession just outside Penn’s line and touched down for the try, 10-0. Penn got on the board with a penalty goal by flyhalf Jonny Chia in the 17th minute and narrowed Columbia’s lead to 10-8 when hooker Matt Belgiovine scored from a lineout at the five in the 25th. Columbia flanker Derrick Lipscomb scored from a five meter scrum in the 34th minute and Zach Bull got his second touchdown in the 40th, bringing the halftime score to Columbia 20, Penn 8.

In the second half Penn narrowed the score to 20-13 with a try by No. 8 Mike Tully four minutes after the restart. Columbia, however, came back with another well-earned try in the 16th when they blocked a clearing kick at Penn’s twenty and Derrick Lipscomb touched down his second try, 25-13. The Lions put the game out of reach with a try by prop Bob McMahon in the 22nd but never-say-die Penn would have the final word when scrumhalf Andy Martin touched down in the 36th, 30-18.
