Las Vegas 7s, Round 1 Recap

Day One From Las Vegas USA 7s

The Yale 7s team headed to Las Vegas on Wednesday to compete in the Las Vegas 7s. Yale traveled with a mixed roster of upper and underclassmen and experience levels ranging from 2 weeks to 4 years playing Yale rugby. On day one of the USA 7s in Las Vegas, Yale advances to the quarterfinals. In other play, the University of Penn is undefeated 2-0. Penn won over American International 14-0, and the Colorado School of Mines 26-0.

Yale opened up with a tough opponent, Texas, who quickly scored 12 points in the first half. Yale was able to get one score from a great pass from Lesnewich to Carr, but it wasn't enough as Texas defeated Yale 27-4.

Yale played the University of San Francisco next and found their stride. Jamie Silveira scored two first half tries and Carr had one, as Yale headed into half-time up 21-0. Coach Broker made some key half-time subsitutions and Yale continued its dominance. Second half tries by Lesnewich, Woocher and O'Brien (twice) finished off the University of San Francisco 49-0.

Next, Yale played the Universty of Regina from Canada. Once again Lesnewich hooked up with Carr to get an early score and take the lead into half-time 5-0. Then in the second half, Regina scored and converted to take a 7-5 lead. In the final seconds, Williams made a punishing run, linked up with O'Brien and then Hull to score and win the game 12-7.

Yale will face Claremont in the quarterfinal at 3:40 EST.

Captain Kevin Daly said, "We're really happy with our play so far. We've made big plays when we needed them and have played physical rugby against some tough opponents. Right now we're just trying to keep out of the wind and stay focused on one game at a time."
